Investing in a better way of Living.

It takes practice...

Anne-Sophie getting good results from her Ashford portable, folding, spinning wheel.

A tangle of raw wool.

Carded into rolags...
Then it's spun into a yarn ,ready for knitting or crochet, dyeing with plant pigments perhaps. This batch is aimed at becoming a hat fairly soon. I'm told there's socks and allsorts else once the hat's done. She has fleece in abundance now sheared and washed  by her own busy hands. No shortage of supply...

Storing Summer smiles to brighten up the dark Winter ahead.

When Madame gets busy, there's no stopping her... Who'd want to?

Spicy Tomato Ketchup, Winter salad and  pickled Cucumber.

Yellow Stick beans, pickled Beetroot and Puréed Tomato... Much else besides.

A splash of seasonal colour for now... feasting later. A variety of Squashes, all edible. More on the way.

In the treasury of morning light...

Anne-Sophie does it again! Another perfect photo image. Capturing the moment? Strangeness and Charm, Colour and Form. Mysterious message...Izzit Art?

Favourite of the week.
The beans are hidden by the tangle of leaf. They won't slip past my greedy gaze. The more we gather now the faster the last flush of flowers will mature. there is plenty of new flowering growth. The present harvest is being done with secatures to avoid recklessly damaging the mother plants.Scragging the plants is unavoidable in the last days of harvest. Not worth too much worry. We will pull out the woody supports , the decaying foliage and stalks will be laid where it stands now to act as a mulch, keeping in humidity driven by constantly rising ground heat. The Earth is cooling. Make the most of it.
Chayot, a hardy traveler climbs the beans. Young sprout plants preparing for frostier times.A few carrots ,(stragglers) and a small patch of Parsley, with just a smattering of Calendula. Room for more stuff...? You Bet!
I'm not bored with beans, they are a highly sociable vegetable. In the one foot margin at the base of the runner beans, Courgettes, Cosmos flowers, out of the picture, Butternut Squash,Cabbage, Capsicum Peppers and bright yellow Tomatoes.

Traditional life support...Don't let them get sick.Food for thought, food for health and happiness.
Anne-Sophie drags the future forward, always enough to share round the table, we are growing more in the garden.

It makes three jars for winter and a small taster for now.

Beam them up Scotty, we are heading for the future...Home sweet Home.

Kitchen news...

The tunnel tomatoes are producing well, this little batch will likely get frozen. All excess to our immediate needs is conserved in a variety of ways... Juice, puree, ketchup, dried and preserved in oil or peeled and bottled in salt water. The Aubergines, from the same location as the Tomatoes will be added to the pile on another table.A lot more as yet to be harvested. My hope is for a large enough crop to fill many jars with brinjal pickle. There are many new recipes I would like to try, a long awaited luxury of creative cooking time this winter.Yellow Zuchini plants are coming to productive maturity.  The old service table is the site of much seasonal culinary action once more.

Classic design, Utility Kitchen service table,(circa,1950's). Loyal worker, deserves a mention.
First harvest of Figs, To be turned into a thick chunky jam, the addition of Ginger and substituting Date sugar for Granulated white crystals..

Take a break, Snacky Fig Biscuits

They had to start somewhere...Instant shop bought pastry and last years Figgy jam. The conserve is too wet to be made into "rolls". Who's complaining, great biscuits.

I muddled up the order of my photos.  Boxes filling with jars , we are smuggling sunshine into what looks to be an otherwise gloomy and for some a cold , hungry winter.

The future tastes good.Fig and Ginger conserve.

Date sugar instead of Cane sugar. This will be a rare vintage, the longer it's kept the better the flavour.

Why are Doctors such COWARDS?

"Up the Reds..."

Big harvest, the indoor crop is keeping Anne-Sophie really busy. .Possibly another four to six weeks more , the outdoor tomatoes are accelerating fast.  They will be mainly eaten fresh in salad,"Money Maker" type plants appearing all over the garden. Cherry tomatoes look like becoming a pernicious weed???We are learning many ways of preserving and conserving, the results so far are most encouraging.

Ketchup, Juice, our very own baked beans without the wasteful throw away tinned can. Pureé pizza topping.  Tomatoes freeze well and  may also be dried.
There'll be plenty of that going on soon enough.

Rendering down the fruit to make Tomato Ketchup.

Shelves filling up fast, We'd better make some more room , As the days get shorter the prospect of a long winter becomes more appetising.  Bottling beetroot next I reckon.

No civilians were harmed in this exercise...

Commercial Sunflower crops are withered and black if not all ready harvested. Ours are still standing ...

They make the sky seem bluer.
Indoor and outdoor Tomatoes , We're streching the growing season to the max.

Worth zooming in to this one. Figs are swelling fast. They make a pretty picture.I will top the tree in Autumn to encourage larger fruit next season

Cameos from Marie Therese's garden... Cosmos flowers and Indian marigolds surround a patch of leeks.

Brassicas...Kale, Cabbage and Brussel sprouts, a powerhouse  of goodness.

Looks like being a hot winter after all.
I haven't managed to over winter Chilli peppers, the green house tunnel will aid the success of this years attempt.
