In Iz Garden...

I have just finished planting the first of this season's leeks. The Mache salad had gone to seed , the straw was stripped back and used as a composting mulch , the plants that grow self seeded , from about September on through winter add welcome fresh salad, without need of cloche or fleece protection. A real friend. The leek seedlings are first for harvest. the top "feather" leaves are cut of to reduduce transpiration. The roots are trimmed so there is no impedence putting them to the bottom- most part of a predibbed hole. The ground was first redug to airate it then enriched with old well rotten composted horse manure. Three rows of leeks, twenty nine in all. A pretty sight to my eyes. I do like to eat em.

I will puddle them in during the evening one can of water after planting will keep them fresh till then. Seven thirty it is .
